Regenerative Agriculture in the Spirit of God’s Creation Mandate
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” – Psalm 24:1
Our planet matters to God. And if it matters to Him, it should matter to us too. Considering the global situation, we believe: it’s time to turn around and do things differently—while there is still time.
In a world where the poles are melting, forests are burning, wars are spreading, and more people than ever are on the run …
In a world where drinking water is becoming scarce, we are drowning in plastic, and people hunger for life, peace, and justice …
In a world where thoughts of the future can leave us discouraged, where so much seems meaningless …
… we look with joy and wonder at God’s creation—and we want to preserve it. We want to rediscover what previous generations still knew, but what we lost through artificial fertilizers, monocultures, and so-called “pesticides”: how to cultivate and care for land and soil in a sustainable and natural way.
Ora et Labora – Pray & Work
This calls for creativity. The conditions for natural farming are becoming increasingly difficult in our regions. That is why we take seriously the old monastic principle of ora et labora—pray and work. In conversation with God, we seek to discern what our land needs to stay balanced and resilient against changing weather. That is why we plant trees!
Hope for Creation
And shouldn’t God work miracles for His creation, which He loves? Romans 8:19 says: “The creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” That means we are called—to use all we are and have, in Jesus’ name, to get creative.
Even if we cannot change the course of world events, we can still make a difference locally. We can create something simple—something that can be replicated, expanded, and multiplied.
Creating Solutions Together
We know that we actually know very little. That is why we remain learners—students of Jesus. Every land has its own challenges. We want to find solutions—for our own gardens, fields, and projects.
But also in order to support other families, communities, and individuals—through workshops, seminars, and hands-on projects—to farm their land naturally. A model for us is the Krameterhof in Austria, where around 45 hectares of mountain land are cultivated according to the principles of “Holzer’s Permaculture.”
Taking Responsibility Seriously
God’s creation needs us. In the face of resource waste, biodiversity loss, the exploitation of people and animals for cheap goods, and the constant self-poisoning through food, we see an urgent responsibility—especially for followers of Jesus—to face this challenge.
For far too long we have taken our wonderful world for granted and simply used it. We haven’t just tolerated its ongoing destruction and watched—it has often been our careless behavior that actively contributed to it.
Yet God has entrusted us with His creation—a wonderful treasure that we were meant to “cultivate and care for.” It’s not only about planting crops or raising animals. Even without owning land, there are many ways to preserve God’s creation—whether through water use, consumption choices, or everyday lifestyle.
And Now?
Let us love what God loves. That is part of the Kingdom of God. And our earth belongs to it.
